Your temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are near the bottom of each ear. This joint allows you to move your jaw. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMJ Disorder, is caused by injury to the joint that connects your jaw to your skull.
Injury can happen when a person grinds their teeth, has a misalignment of the teeth or jaw, poor posture, stress, and arthritis.
Symptoms Can Include:
The temporomandibular joint consists of a hinge that operates in a sliding motion. Segments of the bones that move and interact in the TMJ are surrounded by cartilage. Each of the bones are separated by a disk that absorbs shock. If normally operating, the motion should be smooth.
