Here’s How You Can Detect Beginning Stages of Gingivitis

Beginning Stages of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is one of the most common types of gum disease. It’s estimated that over 50% of adults in the United States have gingivitis on an average of 3 to 4 teeth. As with all health-related concerns, early detection is key.

So what are some of the warning signs to detect the beginning stages of gingivitis early and to prevent serious gum disease and issues to come? In this blog post, we will detail some of the early stages of gingivitis and when it may be time to consult a dental professional.

Top Signs of Gingivitis

1. Consistently Swollen Gums

Typically your gums should be firm and not inflamed. Swollen or inflamed gums will often be an early warning sign of gingivitis and future oral health issues. An excess of bacteria is often to blame for the uncomfortable and visible swelling.

2. Change in Coloration of your Gums

If you notice a change in coloration of your gums from a healthy pink color to a dusky or dark red or even purple this could be an indication of gingivitis. Healthy gums should be pink and firm – so if yours are looking a little lackluster or off in color, this could be a sign of gingivitis.

3. Halitosis, AKA Bad Breath

Of course, no one’s breath smells like roses after eating or drinking, but having consistently stinky breath known as halitosis could indicate you have an infection in your gums. Bacteria is to blame for the smelly breath and gum issues. Gingivitis isn’t the only culprit for halitosis – read about some other causes here

4. Sensitive and Tender Gums

If you notice when you brush and floss – and even when you’re eating and drinking–  that your gums are extra sensitive and maybe even a bit painful, the cause could be gingivitis. Pay attention to see if the sensitivity stays the same or worsens after a few days. If it does not improve, it’s time to pick up the phone and give one of the top gingivitis dentists a call to schedule your appointment.

Final Thoughts on Catching Gingivitis Early

As with all abnormalities you notice, it’s better to consult your dentist sooner rather than later as catching early signs of gingivitis can help prevent more severe gum and health issues down the line.
