Best Dental Technology: A Look at the iTero Scanner

Best Dental Technology: iTero Dental Scanner - South Gables Dental

hen it comes to practicing dentistry, both dentists and their staff need to keep up with the latest treatments and technology to provide the best care to their patients. And South Gables Dental prides itself on doing just this. One of the dental technologies in the office that directly benefits patients is the iTero scanner. Keep reading to learn about some of the best dental technology available today.

So What is an iTero Scanner?

In short, the iTero Scanner is an intraoral scanner. An intraoral scanner is a digital, handheld device that dentists use to scan and create a digital picture of the landscape of a patient’s teeth and gums. And it’s completely pain-free!

According to the iTero website, they share:

iTero™ intraoral scanners are designed to deliver speed, reliability, intuitive operations, and outstanding visualization capabilities for general practitioners or orthodontists. iTero scans have been used in more than 14 million restorative crowns, bridges, and custom implant abutment cases and more than 66 million iTero orthodontic scans, for a total of approximately 80 million scans.

That’s a whole lot of visualizations of patients’ mouths captured by this dental technology.

The Invisalign® and iTero Dental Scanner Connection

Many patients come to the dentist not only for health and true medical reasons but for cosmetic dentistry, too. And straightening teeth is one of the top reasons patients come to South Gables Dental seeking Invisalign treatment. Taking imaging with the iTero scanner will kick off the Invisalign process to capture visualizations of a patient’s teeth to help inform the treatment plan.

According to its website:

iTero is specifically designed to provide the best workflow with the Invisalign® System. The Invisalign® Outcome Simulator chairside application is powered exclusively by iTero scanners to help patients visualize how their teeth may look at the end of Invisalign treatment.

Plus, the site notes that this tech has brought smiles to approximately 15.1 million people including over 4.1 million teens — some of those being Dr. Lesperance’s patients!

The good news is that South Gables Dental also offers both the iTero scanner plus Invisalign services. Check out some of the great before and after results of real patients with real life-changing results.

Benefits of Using the iTero Scanner

The iTero Scanner enables us better serve our patients both in the short- and long-term.

This amazing dental technology:

  • Records trends over time e.g. visualizing tooth wear and tear, movement, and gingival changes.
  • Shows the patient visually on the screen the changes
  • Fast scan processing and lab compatibility can speed up the treatment start time for patients

One of Dr. Lesperance’s favorite features of the amazing iTero digital scanner is the compare feature. It enables him to compare areas in the mouth to the previous scan. It can detect teeth that are becoming more crooked, identify teeth that are wearing away, and visually show changes in the gums for instance, if they are receding. The video below compares a repair of receding gums with a gum graft on three teeth.
